Let’s look at how Social Media Can Lower Self-Worth

Even if you make a solemn promise to yourself not to compare yourself to other people, it’s inevitable that you will. You can’t help it.

People post photos of their parties, family get-togethers, holidays, new cars, engagements, graduations, new jobs, and new babies. In other words, all the markers and milestones of success in our society.

It’s often remarked that people show the best aspects of their lives on social media and never the bad bits. You don’t see the arguments at family parties, the holiday food poisoning, the sleepless nights with a new baby, the months and years of hard work that went into earning that car or that holiday. You don’t see any of that.

You only see the snapshot of happiness and achievement, a collage of other people’s perfect lives that you can in no way replicate. But it’s an illusion. A powerful illusion that can make you feel terrible. You might feel jealous, resentful, a failure, unlovable.

The other illusion of social media is the expectation of continual positive feedback – likes, hearts, comments, retweets, post shares. And if you don’t get them or get enough, you can feel like a failure. You are handing your self-esteem over to hundreds of other people.

But what can you do in the face of all this success that isn’t yours?

You don’t have to become a social media monk or cut yourself off to stop buying into the one-upmanship feedback loop. And you don’t have to stop sharing your achievements or happy times.

You can decide to put yourself first and opt out of the social media success Olympics

  • Take control of how much time you spend on social media
  • Don’t make it your default activity
  • Delete social media apps from your phone
  • Close social media tabs instead of having them constantly alerting you to new posts.
  • Have a good hard look at your list of ‘friends’ and cull them down to people you know and care about. Those who are loving and supportive of you

Conclusion to Social Media Can Lower Self-Worth

If the social media comparison has gotten you down, be kind to yourself and get off that train for a while. Let your friends know you are going Facebook-free for a week or a month and then do it.

Then notice how you feel when you aren’t constantly comparing yourself. Chances are you’ll notice a big difference and decide to make the changes above without feeling you are losing something.
