Confidence Versus Aggressiveness

By Linda on April 20, 2022

confidence vs aggressiveness

It’s difficult for some of us to draw the line between confidence and aggressiveness – especially when attempting to get ahead at work or to achieve a big win in a competition. But where do we draw the line between confidence versus aggressiveness? In this post, we’ll cover some examples.

confidence vs aggressiveness

Rather want to watch Confidence versus Aggressiveness on video?

Before we continue, if you would rather watch this post on video, here it is…

Or want to listen to Confidence versus Aggressiveness?

If you would like to listen to this article while you continue with something else, or read along, here is the audio version for you.

Now, let’s move on to Confidence versus Aggressiveness…

Developing an innate sense of sensitivity toward others is one way to keep from stepping over the confidence line and into the aggressiveness arena.

When you express your views and ideas confidently, others admire your stand – but if you take an aggressive stance using threats or others “weapons” of convincing, others will shy away from you and you’ll never convince them of anything – even though it might be the best idea in the world.

We like to make our own decisions based on the information presented in a calm and factual manner rather than dealing with commands or others methods of aggressiveness.

Many times, you may think you’re only being assertive when you actually crossed the line to aggressiveness – and it could be an accident.

But, getting your aggressiveness under control is a big step toward projecting the confident person you want to be.

The mindset you must develop to turn around aggressive tendencies is one which advocates you to have respect for others rather than crushing the opposition (or those who disagree with you) to win. When you help others win, you become a winner also because of the respect and admiration you garner.

Here are a few differences between an aggressive and a confident demeanor:

😧Aggressive: Glaring looks and looking away.
😀Confident: Making eye contact and paying attention to the other person.

😧Aggressive: No flexibility.
😀Confident: Know and express your own views, but considerate of others.

😧Aggressive: Feels and acts superior to others.
😀Confident: Knows your own values and equal to others.

😧Aggressive: Controls others – becomes a control freak when managing others.
😀Confident: Listens to others and helps them achieve goals.

😧Aggressive: Uses body language to intimidate and bully others.
😀Confident: Knows how to present yourself as a confident person through positive body language.

😧Aggressive: Reaches goals by intimidation of others.
😀Confident: Reaches goals by determination and recognizes help from others.

Conclusion to Confidence versus Aggressiveness

A confident person is polite, but firm, when standing up for his values and beliefs and never tramples others to achieve success.

If you consider yourself an aggressive person, be patient with yourself, but get in touch with your sensitivity to others’ feelings and needs.

If you look at this post on Aggression, you’ll see more of what an aggressive demeanor looks like.

When it comes to workplace happiness, most people get in their own way and that is how knowing The Top Ways that You Can Put Emotional Intelligence to Work will be super helpful for you.

…Sorry to interrupt, but here is the audio and video in case you would rather listen to or watch this article:

I had to interrupt here because I know you would have been upset if you go to the end to find it all the way there at the bottom 🤪, but don’t forget to check out the freebies at the bottom of this page … Let’s move on with the article…

The biggest obstacle that many people face with workplace happiness is low emotional intelligence.

Emotional intelligence is your ability to identify and manage your emotions, as well as those of other people.

How you manage your feelings at work can make all the difference in your career.

Here are some of the top ways that you can put emotional intelligence to work.

Practice Deep and Focused Listening

When you are communicating with other employees, you always want to practice deep and focused listening.

When the other person is speaking, avoid rehearsing your response.

Instead, make it a point to focus your mind and attention on asking clarifying questions to help you better understand what the person is saying.

At the end of the conversation, make sure that you summarize and provide feedback on what you think you heard the individual say.

Then ask if your summary is an accurate portrayal of the conversation.

Start Paying Attention to Body Language

When you’re at work, start noticing the body language or nonverbal communications of those around you.

Pay attention and learn to recognize when body language isn’t consistent with the words that are being spoken.

Start getting used to interpreting body language as a way to understand the complete communication of your colleagues and employees.

With practice, you will get better at recognizing nonverbal signs.

A great book I read and can definitely recommend to you is I Know What You’re Thinking by Lillian Glass (I could actually recommend all her books, they helped me immensely in a lot of different ways)

Avoid Blaming Others

When you always blame others for your misfortunes, you will never be successful in your personal or professional life.

When you get caught up in useless behaviors and emotions, you end up losing precious time and perspective that could help you create a more enjoyable work experience.

If you fill your workday with blame and venting, you are only setting yourself up for even more disappointment and dissatisfaction.

Check Your Attitude

You can increase your emotional intelligence and make your workplace more enjoyable if you check your attitude.

If you go to work with a sour mood, or always see everyone else as wrong, you are the one that will ultimately lose out.

Your attitude is a matter of perspective, and your perspective matters.

If you try telling the story from someone else’s eyes, you’ll be able to start seeing different ways that you can change your plan and increase your emotional intelligence at work.

A book on starting you day right to have a better day that made a massive impact on me is The Miracle Morning by Hal Elrod

Conclusion to The Top Ways that You Can Put Emotional Intelligence to Work

If you find yourself unhappy with your current job, you may need to work on your emotional intelligence.

I had to interrupt here because I know you would have been upset if you go to the end to find it all the way there at the bottom 🤪, but don’t forget to check out the freebies at the bottom of this page … Let’s move on with the article…

While your vision and fresh and creative ideas are critical aspects of success, expanding research shows that emotional intelligence is an incredibly important skill for effective leadership and success.

Here are the top five ways you can boost your emotional intelligence and find success.

Increase Your Self-Awareness

Great leaders make themselves and their personal improvement a lifelong project.

They actively seek out people who will tell them the truth about how they come across to others and areas where they can make improvements.

They look for organizations that will accommodate them or spend money on a coach who will provide them with honest feedback.

Great leaders recognize that they are a work in progress and are always looking for ways to improve.

Develop Your Listening Skills

Good leaders are always aware of how essential listening skills are for success.

They recognize that everyone has the desire to be heard.

Not only do you receive more crucial information when you develop your listening skills, but you are better able to connect with others by picking up meanings and messages through nonverbal cues.

Show a Genuine Interest in Others

Not only do emotionally intelligent people learn the names of everyone that works at their company, but they also make it a point to find out as much about others as possible.

They strive to find out what matters to them, whether it is their family, special interests, or hobbies.

Showing a personal interest in those around you show others that they are valued as people, rather than just cogs in the machine.

Develop Your Ability to Manage Emotions

Developing your ability to manage not only yours but other’s emotions is an important skill to have.

Leaders that possess high emotional intelligence can process information and respond only after they’ve thought about the situation.

Emotionally intelligent people can pick up the underlying feelings behind the words spoken.

Develop a Strong Sense of Appreciation

Great leaders, with high emotional intelligence, are always appreciative and aware that they have others to thank for helping them get to where they are.

One way you can develop more gratitude is to keep a gratitude journal and write down three things you are grateful for every day, to help them maintain a positive attitude and their motivation high throughout the day.

If you struggle with Gratitude, you can sign up for the free 7 Day Gratitude Challenge.

The Top 5 Ways to Increase Your Emotional Intelligence

By Linda on October 6, 2021

There are countless ways to improve your overall life. However, the chances are high that you’re overlooking one of the major areas: your emotional intelligence. Let’s look at The Top 5 Ways to Increase Your Emotional Intelligence.

Improving your emotional intelligence can create a significant difference when it comes to your happiness and success. If you’re looking to increase your emotional intelligence, here are the top five methods to try.

Find Stress-Relieving Techniques

One of the easiest ways that you can improve your emotional intelligence is to determine your sources of stress and find a way to limit them.

Stress-relief measures, like meditation, deep breathing, and yoga, might work for some people, but others might find hitting the speed bag or going for a run to be more effective at reducing stress.

Finding out what works best for you can help you become more emotionally intelligent in no time.

Take a Pause Before You Judge

Judging others is often a knee-jerk reaction that has become second nature to many of us.

However, if you want to increase your emotional intelligence, you need to identify your judgmental thoughts and try to pause before you make a quick judgment.

When you take the time to think about it, you may find that you are not upset at the person, but you are dealing with stress in another part of your own life.

Become Aware of How You Feel

Rather than immediately trying to combat negative feelings, take some time to sit with them for a while first.

Start to understand what it means for you to feel anger or resentment.

Anger without an immediate fix can help you address what is causing you to feel those feelings and allows you to find a healthier way to deal with those emotions.

Learn to Take Criticism

No one likes to feel as though they are being criticized.

However, learning to accept constructive criticism is a significant part of being emotionally intelligent.

Understanding why that criticism might be necessary, and learning how to believe what is being said might be true and adapting your performance is a massive step for increasing your emotional intelligence.

Accept Your Weaknesses

No one is perfect, and that’s alright.

However, if you are looking to increase your emotional intelligence, it is imperative that you accept your weakness and learn from them, rather than simply denying that you have them.

Learning to accept your shortcomings can significantly improve your emotional intelligence.

Conclusion to Emotional Intelligence and these 5 methods

Emotional intelligence is an essential aspect of both your personal and professional success. Following these five methods for increasing your emotional intelligence can significantly improve your life.

The Best Examples of Emotional Intelligence in the Workplace

The Best Examples of Emotional Intelligence in the Workplace

Emotional intelligence has taken the front seat over the last several years when it comes to determining success in the workplace. In this post I cover The Best Examples of Emotional Intelligence in the Workplace.

The Best Examples of Emotional Intelligence in the Workplace

Recent studies have shown that people who are high in emotional intelligence tend to be more productive, have higher social skills, and are more successful than their less emotionally intelligent colleagues.

It can help tremendously to understand how emotional intelligence manifests itself in the workplace.

Here are some of the best examples of emotional intelligence that you should look for at work.

An Upset Colleague Finds A Compassionate Ear

Every employee will have a bad day from time to time, and no one is immune from getting upset.

How you deal with an angry employee speaks volumes about your emotional intelligence.

Compassion and understanding are sure signs of emotional intelligence in practice.

When you are aware of and respond to other’s emotions, it shows that you have a belief that everyone experiences strong emotions from time to time and that you acknowledge that other’s feelings matter.

People Can Express Themselves Openly

When you have a workplace where people are confident about speaking their minds, expressing their emotions, and exchanging views without retribution, you have a workplace that is demonstrating high emotional intelligence.

As long as the exchanges are respectful, emotionally intelligent people don’t get upset when other’s opinions don’t match their own.

Providing Flexibility

Providing some flexibility with the way people work can mean the difference between retaining the best talent and having high turnover.

Emotionally intelligent leaders understand the changing demand and are prepared to work with their employees rather than trying to restrict how people do their work.

They don’t expect everybody to work the hours that they do, live by the same values, or hold the same priorities.

People are Given the Freedom to Be Creative

Depending on the nature of the organization, there may be a high value placed on creativity.

Ideally, you will have a good match between creative people and an innovative organization.

Emotionally intelligent workplaces allow people the time, space, and freedom to be creative and march to the beat of their own drum in order to achieve it.

If you are looking to build more emotional intelligence into your team, the best place to start is with these four tools.

Creating an emotional intelligence workplace will ensure that your employees are productive and that both them and the company succeed.

The 5 Qualities You Need to Develop to Increase Your Emotional Intelligence

The 5 Qualities You Need to Develop to Increase Your Emotional Intelligence

There are several kinds of intelligence, and it’s our job to figure out what they are and how to integrate them into our lives. That’s why in this post I cover The 5 Qualities You Need to Develop to Increase Your Emotional Intelligence

The 5 Qualities You Need to Develop to Increase Your Emotional Intelligence

… but before we continue, if you would rather watch the video or listen to the audio of this post, here they are.

Sorry for that interruption but I know if you got to the end of the post and found out you did not have to read everything and you would rather listen or watch the video, you would be cross, so I added it here🤪…. let’s continue.

Along with your IQ, which has long been used to predict success, the new thing to look at is emotional intelligence or EQ.

Emotional intelligence is the ability to recognize, understand, and manage our own emotions and the emotions of others.

Since we often make decisions and respond to stimuli based on our feelings, it is essential that you know how to grow your EQ.

Here are five qualities that you need to focus on developing if you want to increase your emotional intelligence.

Empathy

Empathy is your ability to understand what someone else is experiencing from within their frame of reference.

We tend to empathize with others based on the reaction to others.

Start by learning how to see situations from someone else’s shoes and then work on your ability to respond accordingly.

This will help you to start to treat others in the manner that you wish yourself to be treated by others.

Self-Awareness

If you want to increase your emotional intelligence, then you have to become self-aware and recognize what stimuli you are facing and then preparing yourself for how to manage your reaction and emotions in both a proactive and reactive manner.

Self-awareness is how you see yourself and how we think others see us.

Curiosity

When you are curious about the world around you, you tend to be more passionate.

When you are more passionate, you are more driven to want to be your best.

Having this kind of learning mindset ends up positively affecting other areas in your life, like your relationships.

Analytical Mind

The most emotionally intelligent and resolute individuals are deep thinkers that tend to analyze and process all of the new information that comes their way.

They also tend to continue analyzing old information, ways of doing things, and habits to determine if they can find new ways to improve.

Having an analytical mind means that you have a healthy appetite for continually improving your mindset and working to better yourself while remaining open to new ideas.

Optimism

If you want to be able to increase the opportunities that are presented to you, improve your relationships, and think clearly, then you need to maintain a positive attitude.

Your attitude is one of the only things that is always within your control.

If you want to improve your emotional intelligence, then you need to choose to live each day with positivity.

Improving your emotional intelligence isn’t a complicated process.

Take some time to work on these five qualities and watch as your emotional intelligence dramatically improves.
